Modern Baku

Tour Description

Baku embodies various architectural styles created and built at different periods. Homeland for people from different countries and cultures, it’s a mixture of Eastern and Western worlds.
Known as an oil country, its modern history is directly connected with the oil industry going as far as to the XIX century. At that time, the terms Inner City and Outside Cite appeared – new parks, gardens were created, houses were built for oil workers and millionaires.

One of the parks which was created at the beginning of XX century at the shore of Caspian Sea is Baku National Boulevard. With its recent renovation, it has become one of the modern gems of the capital city. Along the boulevard, you will see and learn about beautifully-shaped, newly created cultural, business and entertainment venues such as International Mugham Center, Carpet Museum, Little Venice, Flag Square and Crystal Hall.
According to the main construction plan of the city, Baku was built as amphitheater. At the top of this “amphitheater” locates the highest and the most illuminated buildings of Azerbaijan – Flame Towers – symbol of modern Baku.

Tour will continue on the direction of Heydar Aliyev Center, dedicated to former president of Azerbaijan and created by American-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid who was famous for her strangely-shaped, interesting buildings in all over the world. Trump Tower which is also located nearby has become a forsaken building after the president of the US ended his licensing contracts in Azerbaijan.
Last stop of the tour, nowadays known as Fountain Square, was one of the first ever parks created in Azerbaijan and was full of mansions of oil magnates.

Mystic Ateshgah and Burning Mountain Tour

Tour Description

The guide will pick you up either from Sahil or Koroglu metro station (based on your preference) and start heading to the ancient zoroastrian temple Ateshgah which is considered as an authentic Azerbaijani exotic site to visit. It is located approximately 30 km from the center of Baku in the suburb of Surakhany. During that period, you will learn a lot about the temple from your guide, particularly, more about unique natural phenomenon as burning natural gas outlets. The history of Atashgah goes back to the time of the Sassanids, when Zoroastrianism was the main religion in this region. During The Arab caliphate invasion some of the fire-worshippers did not accept Islam and were eventually forced to return to India, where the history of the fire religion continued. A part of the population of the Caucasus remained fire worshippers even after the introduction of Islam.

In the second part of visit, after visiting the temple you will directly go to the Yanar Dag which is not far from Surakhani temple. It is the most famous and popular tourist site of the “eternal flame” in Azerbaijan. Actually, it is rather a hill than a mountain, with natural gas burning on its slope from ancient times. According to a legend, Yanar Dag flame was only noted when accidentally lit by a shepherd in the 1950s. There is no seepage of mud or liquid, which distinguishes it from the nearby mud volcanoes. Alexandre Dumas, during one of his visits to the area, described a similar fire he saw in the region inside one of the Zoroastrian fire temples built around it. Only a handful of fire mountains exist today in the world, and most are located in Azerbaijan.
